Allowing yourself to feel comfort is no different than allowing yourself to feel pain. With what do you choose to gift yourself?

This is the time of year we’re focused on giving presents. We have lists of things to buy or make. We make our choices with care. We hope others will appreciate what we give them. We want to bring them joy.
Unfortunately, this focus on joy tends to be seasonal and it also leaves out important individuals: us. We tend to lose our focus on creating and feeling happiness after a spurt of gift giving. We also forget to include ourselves on the list of folks to please. It’s important to allow ourselves the opportunity to be happy and fulfilled. This is why we are here—to enjoy life. It is our entire reason for being, and we often lose sight of it.
Our perception of life is governed by our beliefs. Our thoughts arise from our beliefs, and the emotions we feel are in alignment with our thoughts. Events in life are essentially neutral, brought to us by the universe (aka the sharing) to incent us to expand our consciousness. Our thoughts put spin on life events, dictating how we experience them. We alone are in charge of our thoughts and our resulting emotions. We choose what we allow ourselves to think, and therefore how we feel.
Once we understand this, the only sane choice is to choose thoughts and beliefs which bring us pleasure. We can make choices about what we permit ourselves to believe and think and how we feel. We can allow ourselves to opt for thoughts and emotions that make us happy and fulfilled. We can elect to experience more joy, by deciding what we want to think and feel. This is a splendid gift to give ourselves this holiday season, and every other day of the year, too.
Let’s take a moment to consciously connect with our inner divinity—our sharing within—to find out how this can work for us. We will start by relaxing our breath and letting it become even and gentle. As we do so, we will picture our sharing within as a golden light in the center of our heart region. As we inhale, our heart light becomes strong and bright. As we exhale, it illuminates all parts of us and our surroundings. We’ll continue the soft breathing and light visualization until we feel easy, calm, and centered. This is our signal of conscious connection with our sharing within.
Now we will think back on current events and identify one we found painful. Perhaps we slipped and fell, spraining an ankle. It’s not something we would have chosen to experience, and most likely we have unhappy thoughts and emotions about it. We may be in a considerable amount of physical pain. We may blame ourselves for being clumsy. We may resent our physical impairment. We may be impatient to be fully physically fit again. We probably don’t feel grateful that the injury occurred. We likely don’t see any reason that a sprained ankle would make us happy.
Now we will mentally review the injury and our reactions to it. As we do so, we will breathe golden heart light into the events and ask our sharing within to help us reframe our thoughts and feelings about the sprained ankle. We’ll allow ourselves realize that we might have been hurt far more severely. We were protected from more serious injury. We’ll recognize that physical down time may give us more time to unwind mentally. We will ponder the good wishes and assistance we receive from others —we are definitely loved. We will see that the injury reminds us of how much we take our functional human body for granted. Most days it works really well. We’re lucky.
We’ll also remember how our mother or father hugged and comforted us as a child when we were sick. It made us feel loved and special. Our illness didn’t seem quite so bad. Now we will visualize wrapping ourselves in golden light and feeling comfort enfold us, from the inside out. We can wrap ourselves in love and know that we and the universe will always take care of us. We can choose to feel safe and nurtured during our recovery. We can allow ourselves to feel comforted and happy. We can give ourselves the gift of understanding that life is good right now, exactly as it is.
